I had the unique opportunity to attend the press days of the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), which is held annually in Detroit every January. By joining the team at She Buys Cars a Detroit blogging influencer, I was able to cover all of the excitement on the show floor, days before it opens to the public. I even attended some pretty amazing press conferences and heard groundbreaking announcements from all over the automotive and mobility industry.
I'm sure that most of my Metro Detroit and Michigander readers have been to an Auto Show or two in their lifetime, so I thought I would round-up some of my favorite things to see at this year's event! The North American International Auto Show is a family-friendly outing that certainly lives up to all of the hype. Each car manufacturer's displays are innovative, exciting and interactive for all ages - and the vehicles shine brilliantly under the bright lights. People from around the globe flock to the Auto Show to marvel at the advancements of automakers far and wide.
Without further ado, here are my Top 4 must-see things at this year's Auto Show! Also, check out the opportunity to win a pair of free tickets to this year's show at the end of the post!
This area of the auto show isn't located in the main room where all of the world's largest manufacturers are, but instead just down the hall along the Detroit Riverfront. This large footprint features dynamic displays that allow all attendees to have the opportunity to experience the wave of futuristic technology that will be here before we know it. AutoMobili-D features autonomous concept vehicles, ride-sharing mobility solutions, and advanced vehicle technologies that will take your breath away and make you ponder the future. These five key mobility areas are highlighted by a unique community of participating brands and tech start-ups:
- Autonomous Driving
- Connected Car Technologies
- Mobility Services
- Urban Mobility
2. Disney/Pixar's 'Cars 3' Lightning McQueen
On my first press day, I had the exciting opportunity to cover a press conference put on by Disney/Pixar related to the newest film in the "Cars" franchise, which will hit theaters in Summer of this year. Key members of the film's production team talked about the new characters in this movie, Cruz Ramirez and Jackson Storm, shared with us the intense planning and research it takes to design these car characters, and even surprised us with an advanced screening of the movie trailer. The most exciting part? A full-size model of the hero of 'Cars', Lightning McQueen! He is on display throughout the duration of the Detroit Auto Show. This is a great stop for the whole family, with plenty of room for a good photo op!
3. Virtual Reality/Interactive Displays
My favorite of all of the Auto Show offerings were the innovative and engaging games and interactive displays put on by the auto manufacturers. We're not talking just a simple build and price touch screen, or a basic iPad installation - these brands have gone all out to create sophisticated and engaging exhibits that teach visitors about their brand ethos and goals. A few of my favorites are pictured below from Ford and Acura, but there are all kinds of hidden gems tucked away in each brand, so be sure to poke around. Virtual reality is really the wave of the future, and the interactive areas are a great way to learn more about a brand on your own terms.
4. Michelin Tire Exhibit
During a private tour of the showroom floor, we had the chance to stop and talk with some representatives at Michelin Tires. They reminded me that the tires really are super important parts on your vehicle, especially if you live in a place like Michigan with the extreme swings in weather and temperature. Michelin has a car display to illustrate their tire capabilities, and the best part (besides getting my photo with the Michelin Man), was their 180-degree camera experience that creates a fun GIF. I saw all kinds of awesome karate-motion shots and fun group photos, but due to my heels (and my feet killing me), I went for the classic, foot pop!
I can't believe this experience has come to a close, but as a lifelong fan of the Detroit Auto Show it was a pleasure to see it up close and personal like never before! As you can see, there are tons of options for you to see and experience, and the technology just keeps getting better. Be sure to follow the link below to win a pair of tickets to this year's Auto Show, and enjoy what NAIAS has to offer!
