Can you believe that Christmas is just a few days away?!  This year has certainly flown by!  With all of my professional responsibilities and working on all kinds of blog stuff, the holidays have certainly snuck up on me.  I did manage to do some pretty major shopping on Black Friday, but many of those pickups were wardrobe staple investments and accessories.  I didn't think too far ahead about what I might wear for my Christmas Day festivities, so I challenged myself to style a holiday ensemble from my current wardrobe. I was going for a look that is festive (duh), but delightfully understated. Take a look at what I came up with - it's a cozy and feminine ensemble that might just inspire you to rifle through the closet!

As I sorted through my clothes, I knew I wanted something that could serve as my "festive" piece.  Since I own little to no red (and probably never will because I'm a Michigan fan - Go Blue), I grabbed this adorable green ruffle top skirt from J. Crew.  With the chilly weather, I wanted to pair the skirt with a sweater, and this cowl neck option from The Limited did the trick. The neutral taupe-grey color contrasts beautifully against the jewel-tone of the skirt, and the draping turtle-neckline and cold shoulder cutouts give me some unique detailing.  These are pieces that I can continue styling separately in all kinds of other looks.

The hardest part of this look was figuring out what type of tights and boots to pair with the skirt and sweater combo.  Because the top is almost white and neutral, a pair of black tights would have thrown the look off-balance and drawn the attention to my legs.  I didn't want that, so I tried a few other options.  Sheer, grey tights still felt too dark.  Navy tights didn't work because they just introduced another color into the look.  And brown was too harsh as well.  As a last ditch effort, I grabbed a pair of baby-pink/nude tights that actually served as a part of my Black Swan ballerina Halloween costume last year, just to see if the lighter color felt better.  Voila! - they were perfect!   I topped the look off with some slouchy, grey suede boots from Aldo that stayed true to the grey-ish tones in the heathered sweater.  I love how the unexpected tights and boot choice really elevates the look to a soft, holiday vibe.

Last but not least, I added all kinds of luxe gold accessory touches.  The necklace peeks out gently from underneath the cowl neck to add a bit of twinkle.  The belt accentuates the gorgeous skirt ruffle detailing.  But the real show-stopper of the accessories are the green druzy earrings from Bauble Bar.  These stunners are a bit heavy, but the way they catch the light and compliment the skirt make them 100% worth it.  Of course I added in my Apple watch and Ultimate Cuff for a classy-but-techie touch (use discount code EMILY20 for 20% off!).  Take a look at the woven, gold bag - believe it or not it's actually a makeup bag .  I re-purposed it for this look, and I think it looks great.   Sometimes you've got to think outside of the box and take a risk  this one paid off.  The woven, metallic bag is roomy and glam, and the heavy chain wristlet makes it look expensive and more like a clutch.  How clever!

I hope everyone has a fantastic holiday celebrating with their loved ones and friends.  I'm looking forward to seeing my family and enjoying some sugar cookies and candy canes.  Wishing you all the best as we close out 2016, and I can't wait to share some exciting new looks in 2017.  Cheers!
